Heading up South Slope |
This past weekend Cranmore hosted the Hannes Schneider Meister Cup. The weekend started with the EMS Randonee tour up Cranmore Mountain. Eastern Mountain Sports let participants demo
different touring set ups as well as teach people the technique of ski touring.
The tour went up South Slope then traversing over to North Conway, then from
there up to the Meister Hut where water and hot chocolate was awaiting everyone
touring. After re-hydrating and
reminiscing of the trek up the mountain, skiers descended the lit up slopes.
75 Years of Cranmore |
Later that evening after feasting on an Austrian themed
buffet dinner in Zip’s Pub and Gill, skiers and riders gathered at the base of
the South Quad and got prepped for the torchlight parade. After everyone made
it off the lift skiers and snowboarders were grouped up and then they lit their
bright red torches and they made their way down the mountain as a large group
at the bottom viewed the spectacle.
Opening Ceremony |
The sun rose on the beautiful Saturday. The day started with
the opening ceremonies, which included the introduction of the Schneider family
and the presenting of the colors by members of the 10th Mountain
Division. Once the ceremony was
completed, 200 racers headed up to take their runs. People of all ages entered
to take part in the meister cup race. Many downed aerodynamic GS racing suits,
while others wore outfits from yesteryear. While the race was commencing there was
an ice carving contest and a vintage attire contest. At the end of the day
there was a big ceremony congratulating the winners of different races
divisions and the various contests that took place throughout the day.
All in all this was tremendous day! Great people, great
race, and a great time!
