One More Week

It is hard to believe that the 2012-2013 winter season is coming to a close this upcoming weekend, but what a winter to remember. After the 2011-2012 season which brought too much rain and warmth, this season was definitely a good rebound season. Thanks to Team Snowmageddon we had the snow guns pumping out snow as early as November 5th. After a few weeks our man made Nor’easter allowed us to open the slopes on November 23rd, and we haven’t looked back since. The aggressiveness of Team Snowmageddon allowed us to open a lot of terrain earlier than we have in years past. Along with the deep snow bases that our snow guns made, Mother Nature also chipped in as well. Cranmore Mountain received close to one hundred inches of natural snow, which provided for plenty of powder days along the way.

Along with the great conditions there were plenty of great events throughout the season like Cranapalooza, Skiing with the GM, The Hannes Schneider Meister Cup and our 75th Anniversary Gala. There truly was never a dull moment this season at Cranmore! As we approach the last days of the season, everyone at Cranmore would like to thank all the skiers and riders who have come out throughout the season. We are lucky to have such great people who choose to have Cranmore as their home mountain. As this chapter of our long and storied history closes we look forward to the next chapter beginning next November!

Mid Winter Conditions in March!

Fresh Tracks

Punxsutawney Phil's prediction for an early spring couldn’t be further from the truth. This recently snow storm that left the slopes with 12 inches of new snow has kept the mountain in mid winter conditions. Looking around the mountain you would think that we are in the middle of the month of January as opposed to the end of March. 100% of our terrain is open and our snow bases are tremendously deep which will ensure great skiing and riding until our projected closing date of March 31st.

Aside from the great packed powder skiing and riding conditions, there are plenty of great events during the final two weekends of the season. This upcoming weekend there will be the Spring Splash on Saturday the 23rd, where participants will test out their water skills against our man made pond at the base of the North Slope. This is a free event for those with a valid lift ticket or season pass. Registration will begin at 9am and the event will start at noon. On Sunday the 24th, we are hosting Cranarchy which is an informal rail jam for our loyal terrain park skiers and riders. There will be a free bbq for those who participate. So make sure you make your way to Cranmore and enjoy some of the finer events of the season with some of the best conditions of the season!

What a weekend!

Jibbin'

This past weekend we had classic spring skiing days here at Cranmore. The sun was shining and temperatures were in the 40’s. The snow was soft which lead to comfortable skiing and riding. On Saturday Cranmore along with Arbor Snowboards hosted the Face/Off rail jam competition in the Alley. Terrain Park Supervisor Ryan MacCallum and his hardworking staff put together a tremendous set up for the event. The snowboarders who entered the contest truly enjoyed the features. With the warm weather and the soft snow, the competitors were able to really push their limits and test their skills. While the rail jam went on, many people soaked up the sun from the deck of Zip’s Pub and Grill.

General Manager Ben Wilcox
Sunday was exactly a carbon copy of Saturday. The day started off with the last installment of the Skiing with the GM series. General Manager Ben Wilcox was surprised again with the great turnout of skiers that wanted to take advantage of skiing first tracks. The grooming team laid out a great corduroy surface and everyone definitely ripped it up. After skiing about 5 runs everyone headed over to the Meister Hut for coffee, hot chocolate and Rennie Rolls! As the day progressed the sun became higher in the sky and snow was even softer making for another memorable day.

There is still plenty of good skiing left to this season. With more days like this weekend ahead this is a good time to swing by and Tanmore at Cranmore!

Hannes Schneider Meister Cup Weekend

Heading up South Slope

This past weekend Cranmore hosted the  Hannes Schneider Meister Cup.  The weekend started with the EMS Randonee tour up Cranmore Mountain. Eastern Mountain Sports let participants demo different touring set ups as well as teach people the technique of ski touring. The tour went up South Slope then traversing over to North Conway, then from there up to the Meister Hut where water and hot chocolate was awaiting everyone touring.  After re-hydrating and reminiscing of the trek up the mountain, skiers descended the lit up slopes.

75 Years of Cranmore
Later that evening after feasting on an Austrian themed buffet dinner in Zip’s Pub and Gill, skiers and riders gathered at the base of the South Quad and got prepped for the torchlight parade. After everyone made it off the lift skiers and snowboarders were grouped up and then they lit their bright red torches and they made their way down the mountain as a large group at the bottom viewed the spectacle.

Opening Ceremony
The sun rose on the beautiful Saturday. The day started with the opening ceremonies, which included the introduction of the Schneider family and the presenting of the colors by members of the 10th Mountain Division.  Once the ceremony was completed, 200 racers headed up to take their runs. People of all ages entered to take part in the meister cup race. Many downed aerodynamic GS racing suits, while others wore outfits from yesteryear. While the race was commencing there was an ice carving contest and a vintage attire contest. At the end of the day there was a big ceremony congratulating the winners of different races divisions and the various contests that took place throughout the day.

All in all this was tremendous day! Great people, great race, and a great time!
